Safety Crew Showdown is a complete teaching resource, including lesson planning and all lesson artefacts along with advice for beginning teachers. Personal safety, risk management and safe work procedures are at the forefront of teaching in the Design & Technologies subjects.

Whilst this element is vital, students often perceive it as ‘boring’ and, as educators, we often struggle to positively engage our students in this mandated legislative element of our courses. Students are often described as being disruptive, distracted or unsettled due to the density of documentation they must interpret and enact. As such, this element is often the least enjoyable part of the Technology Mandatory units.

As teachers this can lead us to having a lack of confidence in our student’s safety knowledge prior to undertaking any form of practical work in our classrooms. Safety crew showdown aims to proactively combat these problems by gamifying the safety compliance. This all-in-one resource offers students a fun sequence of learning covering safety across the Stage 4 Technology Mandatory subject areas of Engineered Systems, Food & Agriculture and Materials Technologies (textiles). Students work in small teams, utilising positive teamwork and collaboration skills to gain the required safety knowledge whilst working towards a specific objective of each game. This ensures support can be seamlessly embedded for students with additional learning needs. This resource seamlessly embeds the use of OnGuard but all elements are editable and could easily be edited with the use of your school’s safety quiz or demonstration.

  • ·        Three (3) of my students were awarded the top three positions in the Uprising Design competition, which awarded students tickets to attend Good Design Australia.
  • ·        80% of students in my class received a band 5 or 6 result in HSC Hospitality.
