activity trackers. These products are also called ‘smart products’ and are fast becoming everyday items.

This innovative course will show you how to help your students design their own amazing IoT smart products! Your confidence to teach Digital Technologies will grow and best of all the strategies and tips you’ll learn are totally unplugged.

You will walk away with fun, hands-on activities to use in your classroom, linked directly to the new Science & Technology Syllabus, including a simple 5 step strategy for designing any smart product you can imagine.

Sessions

Session 1

  • Discuss the what and why of IoT innovation in society.
  • Examine how easily IoT products link to the new Science and
  • Technology Syllabus and the Technology Mandatory (Stage 4) Syllabus
  • Refresh thinking skills (design thinking, systems thinking and computational thinking) required for IoT systems.
  • What are the considerations when designing IoT products? Explore the principles of good design for sustainability.

Session 2

  • Explore IoT student-friendly frameworks to support creativity, functionality and usability.
  • Apply fun design strategies to support and incorporate learning across the curriculum content.
  • Learn about the characteristics of materials and sensors when designing.

Session 3

  • Based on aspects of design thinking and design and production
    processes you will;

    • Identify an IoT system and its components
    • Assess how to safely store, represent and analyse information (data) for IoT
    • Learn how to create an IoT prototype.

Session 4

  • Collaborate and develop an IoT concept.
  • Showcase your IoT concept and justify how your product meets the need or opportunity as identified.
  • Develop strategies for evaluating innovative IoT designs.

Completing Smart Design & Sustainability: A Guide to Creating Products for STEM will contribute 5 hours of  Elective PD in the priority area of 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
