Unlocking the Power of NESA Key Words

Maximising Student Literacy Success with NESA Key Words using Key Terms Posters, Scaffolds and Flashcards.

Want to transform the way students engage with syllabus content?

Every NESA syllabus contains NESA Key Words that must be understood for students to comprehend the content thoroughly. These seemingly simple terms hold the key to unlocking a deeper, more profound understanding of the curriculum and assessment task requirements. As students navigate the ever-evolving landscape of academic challenges, having a firm grasp on these NESA Key Words has never been more crucial.

What are the NESA Key Words?

The NESA Key Words are the verbs used across all NSW syllabus documents to help students break down and respond to various tasks and questions. They are used in every HSC exam. You can find a glossary of them HERE.

Why teach the Key Words?

By mastering these NESA Key Words, students can unlock their full potential and achieve better marks in the HSC and school assessment tasks. Furthermore, these key terms will assist students in comprehending the core concepts and expectations of each subject syllabus. For example, a student needs to understand the difference between ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ in order to answer an essay question correctly. If they do not understand these verbs, they may provide an answer that does not meet the criteria and therefore receive a lower mark.

So how do we best assist our students in understanding these verbs?

Let’s get explicit. Students need to consciously understand the meaning of each term in order to address the content and questions accurately. We have three products to help you deliver this content to your students.

Key Term Posters

Firstly, our Key Term Posters are a gamechanger for visually representing these essential linguistic tools. Clear, visually engaging definitions and examples allow students to understand each term thoroughly. We now have these as a digital version, so you can show them to your students anywhere or print them out and stick them on your classroom walls as a constant visual aid. If you’d like to purchase the A4 colour-printed, laminated Key Term poster packs already made, we have that option available for you also.

Key Term Scaffolds

Secondly, put their understanding to the test with our Key Term Scaffolds. These templates offer a structured approach to breaking down key terms and applying them to various tasks, ensuring students gain a deeper understanding and mastery of the material. These come as a digital version for you to share with your students, or you may like to print the coloured or black and white version to hand out to your students. We like to print out a class set and store them alphabetically in a central folder for the students so they can have access to them to use whenever they please.

Key Term Flashcards

Thirdly, consider buying a class set of Key Word Flashcards. You can place these in your classroom in a central location so that students can access them whenever they are working on answering syllabus content questions. Several schools have included the cost of these in their school fees or book packs to ensure that students always have a set with them as they are applicable in every subject.

Tips for Using Key Term Posters and Scaffolds in the Classroom

Display Key Term Posters prominently in your classroom.

Place the posters where they can be easily seen and referred to by students during lessons. This constant visual reinforcement will help students internalise the key terms and develop a deeper understanding of their meanings and applications.

Use Key Term Scaffolds within regular classroom activities.

Incorporate the Key Term Scaffolds into your lessons by using them as a place for students to write the answers to syllabus content activities. Use them as warm-up exercises, exit tickets, or even as a means of structuring group discussions. By consistently engaging with these scaffolds, students will develop a strong foundation in the key terms. They will become more adept at breaking down tasks and responding to questions.

Encourage student collaboration.

Have students work in pairs or small groups to complete Key Term Scaffold activities. This collaboration will allow students to learn from one another and share insights. They will also develop a deeper understanding of the key terms and their applications.

Reinforce key terms during instruction.

As you teach, use the key term posters and scaffolds consistently and intentionally. Refer to them constantly when delivering instructions for the lesson. This will help students become more familiar with the language and make connections between the key terms and the subject matter.

Assess student understanding of key terms.

Use quizzes, tests, and other formative assessments to gauge students’ understanding of the key terms. This will help you identify areas where students may need additional support and inform your instructional strategies moving forward. You may even like to conduct a pre-test and post-test to see where learning has occurred and any gaps.

Provide regular feedback on key term usage.

Offer constructive feedback on students’ written work, emphasising their use of key terms and offering suggestions for improvement. This feedback will help students refine their understanding and application of the key terms, leading to improved HSC results. This is particularly evident if you are using our HSC homework books.
