Winter Plants for the School Garden

The cold winter weather means it's time to plant new herbs and veggies in the garden. Here are some great winter plants for the school garden!

Your school garden may be in need of a refresh now that winter has arrived! With the warmer days now behind us, your autumn plants may not be faring so well. Don’t stress though! We have some ideas for winter plants for the school garden that can be planted in the coming weeks.

Snow peas

Winter is the best time of year to grow snow peas as they love the cooler weather. It’s important to remember to place a trellis in the garden before planting the snow peas to allow the plant to climb up it as it grows. Students will also love picking the snow peas at harvest time which will arrive around nine to eleven weeks after planting.

Rosemary

Winter is a great time to plant rosemary! Simply plant it in an area where there is plenty of sunlight and soil with good drainage. It’s also important to not over-water it. Once the rosemary is ready, your students can take cuttings and add the herb to chicken, lamb or potato dishes.

Spinach

Spinach likes to grow in the colder climates, making this time of year a great time to plant it! Your spinach will be ready for harvesting around four to six weeks after planting. Just remember to water it regularly!

Mint

Mint is another herb that likes to grow in the cooler weather. This herb, though, is best planted in its own pot, rather than being in with all your other herbs and veggies in the school garden. This is because the root system can become invasive. Also make sure your students give the mint plenty of water; the soil doesn’t need to drain well either.

Leek

Leeks are a great winter plant for the school garden, especially if your school is located in a warmer area. Simply plant the seedlings 10cm deep and around 5cm apart from one another and make sure they have good drainage. Leeks are a wonderful vegetable to add to your classic winter soup and casserole recipes.

We hope your school garden thrives with these winter plants!
